Waymo will split with Uber in Austin and Atlanta in January 2028 and book robotaxi rides in its own app

Waymo will stop offering its robotaxis through Uber in Austin and Atlanta starting in January 2028, co-CEO Tekedra Mawakana told Bloomberg News, as reported by TechCrunch. Riders in both cities will book Waymo directly in its own app, as they already do in Waymo's other markets. The Uber deal had been set to run until May 2028, and the Financial Times reported earlier this year that Waymo wanted out.

Mawakana said Waymo first partnered with Uber for scale, but that the rider experience was "a little bit of a crapshoot" because riders never knew whether they'd get a robotaxi or a human driver. Uber told Bloomberg it was Waymo's idea not to add a direct robotaxi booking option in Uber's app.
