Japanese carrier KDDI and taxi startup newmo said on November 6, 2026 they signed a capital alliance: KDDI will subscribe to a third-party allotment of newmo shares. Nikkei reports the investment amount and ownership stake were not disclosed. The same day, newmo, KDDI, and KDDI Smart Mobility signed a business alliance aimed at commercial robotaxi service in Sakai City, Osaka Prefecture, in 2028. KDDI's release says commercialization would initially include a safety driver onboard. KDDI says it will supply communications links, AI computing for training and inference, remote monitoring, and high-precision positioning; newmo will run taxi and robotaxi ops, apps, fleet systems, and autonomous AI. newmo president Naoki Aoyagi said the company already operates about 1,900 taxis nationwide, a company figure. Servospace take: a named city-year commercial target and carrier capital, but undisclosed check size and a safety-driver start keep unit economics opaque.
