Zoox will send Toyota Highlander test fleets to Europe and Asia before its robotaxis

Amazon-owned Zoox plans to send a test fleet of data-collection vehicles to Europe and Asia as the first step of a global expansion, chief executive Aicha Evans said on Wednesday, November 4, at the WSJ Tech Live event. Zoox first sends Toyota Highlanders retrofitted with its sensors before its purpose-built robotaxis drive a city's roads.

Evans said the target list includes London, cities in other EU countries, Korea and Japan. Zoox runs about 150 robotaxis in a few US cities, including San Francisco and Las Vegas, she said, and as of September listed 12 US locations.

Why it matters

The WSJ report gave no timeline for the overseas fleets or for robotaxis to follow. In new US cities, Zoox manually drives to map streets before testing autonomous driving, so these fleets are a data-gathering step, not a rider launch.
